The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or use the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra because the medication can cause serious heart problems in people with a rare inherited heart condition called atrial fibrillation.
FDA officials said they have received a warning about the possibility of a heart attack or stroke when using Viagra.
A study released Tuesday by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute found that up to two in every three men taking Viagra in the U. are at an increased risk of the condition, the agency said.
The FDA said in its warning, "There is a serious risk of heart problems and stroke when taking Viagra, including an increased risk of a heart attack and stroke, in certain patients with a rare inherited heart condition called atrial fibrillation."
The FDA also urged patients not to take Viagra if they have not suffered an erection or if they were taking nitrates used to treat chest pain, according to the agency.
In some cases, people taking Viagra may also be at an increased risk of getting serious side effects, including stroke and blood clots, the FDA said.
The agency also said that in some cases, the drug may cause a condition called "angina," which is when blood flow in the body slows. People with the condition, called atrial fibrillation, also can develop a rare inherited condition called "fibrillation" and may require surgery to remove the problem, the FDA said.
Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, which is the generic name for the active ingredient in Viagra. Generic sildenafil is available in the U.
In February, the FDA approved the drug to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, also known as high blood pressure in the lungs.
The FDA's warning is based on an analysis of more than 1,300 people who took Viagra to treat the condition, the agency said.
The drug has been linked to more than 2,000 deaths in the U. in recent years.
The FDA recommends patients taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction consult with a doctor and be monitored regularly to check for side effects or heart problems.
A study published last year found that the risk of a heart attack or stroke in people taking Viagra was about 2 percent, to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
The FDA has said it will update its warning when it becomes available.

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is one of several ED pills that’s considered a PDE5 inhibitor. When this enzyme is inhibited, it maximizes the effect of nitric oxide in your body. (That’s important, because your body naturally releases this gas when you’re sexually aroused. So it’s key to the process of getting and maintaining an erection.)
With more nitric oxide in play, the muscles around your penis can relax. In turn, blood flow to your penis improves. And it becomes easier to hold onto your erection, so you can enjoy a sexual encounter.
Sildenafil also works quickly. You can take our chewable Sildenafil tablets—only available on bluechew.com—about one hour before sex. Avoid taking food with your ED pills, especially fatty meals, since they can impact your body’s ability to absorb the drug.
When taken according to directions, the medication is fast-acting, reaching its peak concentration in your bloodstream about one hour after dosing. Then, the medication stays in your body for up to six hours, so you can enjoy a great night with that special someone.

Your doctor will determine the right dosage based on your medical history and how you respond to the medication. It can take up to two weeks for the full effect of the medication on an erection.
If you’re taking Vardenafil (Levitra®), a similar oral medication, a daily dose of Sildenafil is not recommended, as it can lead to an increase in side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of Sildenafil before you stop taking it.
To make sure you can get a Sildenafil dose that covers both erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction, tell your doctor if you have Addison’s disease, a skin condition that affects the body’s skin, including the face.
